Wise Blood aka Chris Laufman, just signed on with Dovecote, home of the Futureheads and Ed Harcourt for a highly anticipated full length album coming out this spring. His creative style of sampling reminds me of a screwed, R&B, pop version of Gold Panda…with gentle prince-like falsettos over a bed of dark and powerful percussion beats and samples.

Fun fact:

Laufman turned down a scholarship to attend Julliard claiming that he “will attend the school only after he takes over pop-music”.

Super Stoked about the things to come from these talented musicians from Tempe. They say their biggest influences come from Broken Social Scene and Akron Family and it can cleary be seen in their debut EP, Wake Up Dead.

Wake Up Dead, is filled with shimmering harmonies, and melody-driven compositions that make for one creative and powerful sound. I wish I had four hands so I could give this EP four thumbs up!

AWHOLNATION, Back From Earth

Aaron Bruno’s project, Awolnation, is a chaotic blend of hand-slapping soul, punk, and style reminscent to that of little richard. I love how inconsistent this whole album is…if you like one song thinking that it sets the path for the rest of the album…don’t get your hopes up. This album needs to pop an addy, because it definitely has ADD written all over it.

Well it smells like fall, but it still sounds like summer. It looks like the fun in the sun might live on with this lead single off of El Guicho’s new album, Pop Negro. This new album reminds me of Yeasayer and Animal Collective’s instrumentation and creative sound mixed with a hint of Manu Chao, but I don’t know if that’s just because it’s in Spanish…haha…kidding, but seriously. I think it’s a decent album, but if it had more structure or a little more cleaning up of the disconnected “split ends” it would be a great album.

Dark Dark Dark, Wild Go

A musical formula comprised of amazing, faultless vocals (Nona Marie Invie) mixed with mediocre instrumentation. Their Americana, Polka and folk influences are definitely apparent, but tend to be a little much throughout the album. I can’t tell if I like the band as a whole or if I’m just so consumed by her Regina Spektor style of singing which is so irresistibly soothing and charming. My advice for this Minneapolis-based sextet…keep it simple or Invie break off and make it big time!

Think indie garage rock meets that movie with Tom Hanks, That thing you do! I can’t decide whether to love or hate their raw, fuzzed-out riffs which creates this feeling of listening to your friend down the street’s band in the basement, but one thing I do know…it’s catchy as hell. Hopefully these guys will leave an impression on the people and will be able to afford a real studio experience that way we can see if there’s any talent in these Cleveland kids.

Sufjan Stevens, The Age of Adz

Imagine if Nine Inch Nails (just the industrial clinkity clankity part) and Passion Pit had a baby and then that baby and Sufjan Stevens fucked they would give birth to The Age of Adz

This album reminds me of the success and genius of The Eraser, the solo album by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. The Age of Adz, shows and compliments the genius and talent that is Sufjan Stevens. Taking everything we knew about him and tweaking his sound and methods. I love that he’s living in the now, and is incorporating the newest, found love of indie rock lovers…electronica. This album is filled with an array of electronic beats, intertwining soft-delivered vocal patterns and multi-layered orchestration…which sounds so far to be, a terrific album. Check out a couple of these dope new tracks.

Talent isn’t everything, but if it were, then Danny Swain would be fuck-you famous, retired, and swimming in a sea of money like Scrooge McDuck. With five self-produced studio albums, three instrumental albums and a greatest hits compilation to his credit, Danny! has to be the most accomplished emcee you’ve never heard of. His latest, Where is Danny Swain? was picked up by Def Jux and then shelved. It’s all too depressing to talk about when you hear how good it is. So after listening to this song, go write a letter to your congressman demanding that they Free Danny!

“Helicopter” was this dreary, dream-like track by Deerhunter, until one of my faves, Diplo took it for an electro-reggae ride and now in my opinion has created something better. Diplo talk to Danger Mouse about some collab work…these beats with Deerhunter’s music makes earcandy.
